We’re looking for a senior HR professional to join us to drive expertise and consistency in our approach to employee relations and policy matters across the EMEA and APAC regions. This is an exciting time to join us as we continue to drive our strategic HR transformation globally.

About the role of Director of Employee and Labour Relations

The Employee and Labour Relations team will provide expertise on employee relations and policy matters across Avis Budget Group (“ABG”) International, to drive consistency of approach wherever possible.  They will use internal and external insight to develop an Employee Relations (“ER”) and Employment Policy strategy, build guidance and standards across a range of employee and labour relations needs (this will include restructuring initiatives, performance and case management).  The team will partner with Human Resources Directors (“HRDs”) to help drive business efficiency solutions through the workforce and also support managing the relationships with Unions and Works councils etc, supporting to engage them on partnership requirements and facilitate change activity as appropriate.  

Role Responsibilities

To succeed in this role, you’ll need to be able to work across all levels of the organisation, providing g employee relations and policy advice, interventions and solutions to meet International objectives.

  • Develop employee relations strategy and plan with a focus on developing a positive ER climate during complex organizational change
  • Develop collective bargaining governance and strategy
  • Own the Avis Budget Employee Council (“ABEC”) relationship
  • Support HRDs in leading relationships and key negotiations with unions and works councils and other representative forums as appropriate with a view to securing business performance, employee engagement and legal compliance.
  • Work closely with HRDs to design and deliver strategies, policies and practices that are aligned with the objectives and values of ABG. This will include providing employee relations and employment policy and process, advice, guidance, insight, training and expertise to ensure all HR teams are able to provide employee relations and policy advice and drive a high performing culture
  • Liaise with Employment Legal team to ensure legal risks are fully considered and to ensure consistency of advice and guidance to divisional HR teams.
  • Lead ABG’s response to industrial disputes and business continuity planning for industrial action.
  • Lead and build a high performing team that in turn add value to ABG, in line with budget and relevant financial constraints
  • As a senior leader, represent the function internally and externally as appropriate across a range of stakeholders including regulators
  • Play an active role in embedding the new One HR Team and ensuring its success
  • Lead HR compliance related initiatives and programmes across the International.

  • Substantial experience of leading an employee relations function within a complex, unionised organisation, (including strategy development and implementation)
  • In depth knowledge of employment law and industrial relations practices in a pan-European setting and their contribution to business success
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Experience of creating and implementing employee relations interventions that have a demonstrable impact on organisational success
  • Experience and understanding in the area of employee engagement
  • Ability to build relationships and communicate at all levels within an organisation
  • Flexible approach to problem solving, balancing policy, best practice, legal and business issues to provide pragmatic solutions
  • Credible expert with the ability to influence; evidenced through delivery and up to date knowledge
  • Insight driven – at ease with data and analytics to demonstrate impact and return on investment
  • Inspiring leader, with an ability to engage their team and the wider organisation
  • Legal qualification and/or MCIPD (Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development) qualified (or equivalent), preferable.
